Although it seemed like Kanye West may have been joking around during the Grammys as he headed on stage when Beck won the award for album of the year, well, maybe he wasn't? The category also included Kanye's longtime friend and collaborator Beyoncé, whose work he spoke up for when he interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV VMAs. During the Grammys, he was seen walking on stage, but he made a "never mind" gesture and returned to his seat. People assumed he was joking, giving a nod to that VMAs moment, but after the show, Kanye and Kim Kardashian appeared on E! to talk about the Grammys, and the rapper didn't seem too pleased with the award show - or with Beck.
He explained, "I just know that the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain't gonna play with them no more. And Beck needs to respect artistry and he should've given his award to Beyoncé." As Kim looked on, Kanye elaborated, adding, "Because when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in their face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you're disrespectful to inspiration. And we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day, and they listen to that Beyoncé album and they feel like it takes them to another place." As for why he didn't want to interrupt Beck at the Grammys? "I'm not gonna do nothing to put my daughter at risk, but I am here to fight for creativity. That's the reason why I didn't say anything tonight, but you all know what it meant when Ye walked out on that stage!"
Later, Kim seemed to echo his sentiments when she tweeted a picture wearing a surprised expression alongside John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, writing, "This is the Beck won that award face?!?!?!" In any case, there's one person who Kanye seemed to be totally cool with at the Grammys, and that was Taylor Swift. It's been nearly six years since Kanye interrupted her acceptance speech at the VMAs, and on Sunday, the pair posed for pictures and chatted in the audience.
