Chef Sandra Lee has breast cancer and will undergo a double mastectomy this week. The TV personality and partner of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo shared the news in a Good Morning America interview that aired on Tuesday. Sandra said she learned of her diagnosis during a photo shoot for People's Most Beautiful list in March. "And I walked off the set, and 20 minutes later my doctor called and told me I had breast cancer," she said. "I didn't even cry, I was stunned . . . You know, and that's just how fast life turns. It turns on a dime." Sandra told host Robin Roberts she credits early diagnosis with saving her life and urged young women to "get your rear end in" the doctor's office for a mammogram. "I'm 48 years old. I've got - I've got a couple years till 50," she said. "If I would have waited, I probably wouldn't even be sitting here."
Sandra underwent a lumpectomy following the diagnosis. "When the [surgery] was done, they did not have clean margins," she said. Her radiologist told her she would have to undergo radiation for as many as eight weeks and suggested a mastectomy. "And so I said, 'OK. If I'm going to have a mastectomy, am I supposed to just get one done?' Both the radiologist and the doctor said, 'You're a ticking time bomb.' And they both said, 'You need - I would just get them both done,'" Sandra added. In a separate interview with People, Sandra got candid about how supportive Andrew has been, saying he will be in the room during her second operation this week. "This is about her feeling secure and loved," he said. For more on Sandra's medical journey, read her interview in the upcoming issue of People and stay tuned for her video diary.
